PBHL- H401: The final deliverables require students to work in diverse teams to develop a comprehensive strategic plan for a local hospital or health service organization, including multiple strategic initiatives, an implementation plan, and an in‑class presentation. These assignments emphasize collaboration, relationship‑building, and clear communication, requiring teams to effectively present the organization’s current state, internal and external strategic factors, and recommended strategies—while strengthening interpersonal, teamwork, and presentation skills essential for healthcare leadership.

What I learned
Through this course, I gained a strong understanding of the purpose and importance of strategic planning in health service organizations and how it guides long‑term decision‑making in a complex and constantly changing healthcare environment. I learned how to construct and organize a complete strategic plan, including environmental scanning, market analysis, competitive assessment, and strategy formulation. The course emphasized applying concepts like SWOT analysis, market research, and competitor analysis to real health systems while considering internal structures, organizational culture, and external trends such as regulatory, technological, and economic changes. Collaborating as a team to develop and present a strategic plan strengthened my ability to think critically, synthesize information, and communicate strategic ideas clearly

This course supported key program competencies by strengthening my analytical, conceptual, and communication skills within a healthcare management context. I demonstrated effective written, oral, and visual presentation skills through strategic plan development and presentations, while also practicing teamwork and collaborative problem‑solving. I applied strategic planning terminology and concepts to evaluate internal and external environments, competitive positioning, leadership roles, and ethical, social, and cultural considerations impacting healthcare organizations. Overall, the course enhanced my ability to assess how organizational dynamics, leadership, and environmental forces interact to shape strategic direction and execution in health service organizations.
