Capstone Internship

Primary Responsibilities and Projects

  1. During my internship, my primary responsibility was to analyze existing orthopedic workflows using a standardized evaluation form to assess efficiency, identify gaps, and highlight oppurtunities for improvement. This required reviewing operational steps, document findings, and advising how to the workflow can be better optomized.  

  2. During the Electronic Health Record transition, I assisted with issue tracking by entering tickets and system concerns into an organized Excel table. This documentation supported the team in analyzing trends, prioritizing resolutions, and improving the transition process.

  3. I built an Excel log to help organize data related to a specific metric, allowing the team to more easily track trends and evaluate outcomes.

  4. I attended Manager and Director meetings and participated in Executive Team meet‑and‑greet sessions, gaining exposure to cross‑department collaboration and observing how operational decisions are made at the leadership level.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

During my Orthopedic Operations Internship, I gained a deeper understanding of healthcare operations by observing and participating in periods of organizational change. I had firsthand exposure to the transition of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, which allowed me to witness the level of coordination, training, and workflow adjustments necessary to maintain continuity of care during significant changes. Additionally, I learned how Management Services Agreements function within a healthcare organization and their role in structuring operational and administrative responsibilities. Through workflow evaluations, I strengthened my ability to analyze operational processes and understand how strategic management decisions and technology changes impact orthopedic practice efficiency and patient care.
